Award Winning Books

Looking for a different way to select a book to read? Can you spot a winner? Each year there are a number of awards given to some of the best children’s/young adult books of the previous year. Some of these awards include:

• The Caldecott Medal is awarded annually to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children.
• The Newbery Medal is awarded annually to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.
• The Michael L. Printz Award annually honors the best book written for teens, based entirely on its literary merit.
• The Coretta Scott King Book Awards are given annually to outstanding African American authors and illustrators of books for children and young adults that demonstrate an appreciation of African American culture and universal human values.

There is a cart in the children’s area with winners from previous years. Read some, check out the criteria for selection, and then see if you can pick a winner for 2013.
